Rules, controls and help for Crazy Eights

Use the controls beside the game rather than guessing the rules. Empty your hand by matching the active suit or the top card’s rank. Eights let you choose the next suit. Start a new round when you are ready to try again. Each player starts with five cards from a standard 52-card deck. The starting discard is not an eight.

Two-player free play with a local computer opponent. No draw-two stacking or reverse cards. A refreshed page starts a new round.

Build familiarity through play

Begin with the basic rule, then follow the result of your action. After an eight, match the called suit or play another eight. The eight’s printed suit is not the active suit. Try the rule on the board, then read the next instruction.

Aim for this result

The board gives you the information needed for the next action. Empty your hand by matching the active suit or the top card’s rank. Eights let you choose the next suit. Keep the goal in mind before your next move.

Start here and follow along

  1. Each player starts with five cards from a standard 52-card deck. The starting discard is not an eight.
  2. Play one matching card. An eight is always playable; choose its suit using the suit selector before tapping the card.
  3. After an eight, match the called suit or play another eight. The eight’s printed suit is not the active suit.
  4. Draw one card at a time when needed. Drawing does not end your turn; keep drawing or play a legal card.
  5. The stock is not recycled. With no stock and no legal card, pass. Two consecutive passes end the round in a draw.
  6. The first empty hand wins. New round deals again.

Using the playing area

Check the rule below as you play. Tap a playable card. Set the suit selector before playing an eight. Draw and Pass have separate buttons. The game area remains available above the explanation.

A closer look at one example

The board gives you the information needed for the next action. If 5♣ is on top, you can play another club, another five, or any eight. Calling hearts with an eight makes hearts the active suit. Try the rule on the board, then read the next instruction.

Where a round can go wrong

A careful first move helps you understand the round. Do not assume that every eight keeps its printed suit. The called suit is shown beside the discard pile. Start a new round when you are ready to try again.
